SHAWANO, WI – As students head back to class this fall and August marks National Immunization Awareness Month, Shawano-Menominee County Health Director Nick Mau is reminding families about the importance of keeping vaccinations current.
Mau called vaccines “a huge public health accomplishment” and emphasized that both children and adults should review their records. He noted that some doses can expire and boosters may be required. “The most important thing anyone can do is talk to a trusted health care provider,” Mau said.
With schools reopening, many families are also planning for flu shots. Mau advised holding off just a bit longer, explaining that most providers do not yet have the updated vaccine in stock.
Because the flu strain changes every year, he said the shot is most effective when given closer to flu season. Local clinics are expected to begin offering the updated vaccine within the next couple of weeks.
