SHAWANO, WI – As renovations continue at the Shawano Recreation Center, residents are asking two big questions: Will the updated facility include a gym, and will membership fees increase?
Parks and Recreation Director Matt Hendricks says a gym is not in the current plans. While the city is investing about $5 million into the ongoing project, he noted it would take an additional $3 million to add a gym.
“We’re hopeful that at some point we can build that,” Hendricks said. “We designed it in a way to make sure it would fit in the future, so if that happens down the road, a gym can be added on-site.”
As for fees, Hendricks says the city is balancing two priorities: offsetting some of the costs tied to the tax-based budget, while also keeping recreation accessible to the community. To that end, membership rates are expected to stay the same for at least the first year or two after the facility reopens.
The renovation project is aimed at modernizing the rec center while maintaining its role as a place to keep Shawano residents active and healthy.
