SHAWANO, WI- The Shawano Common Council has received its first look at the city’s proposed 2026 capital improvement projects, totaling roughly $8 million, more than double this year’s budget.
The increase is largely tied to the ongoing Shawano Recreation Center project, estimated at $5.25 million. The city is receiving a $4.25 million state grant to help cover costs, along with about $304,000 in other grant funding.
Street work remains a major focus of the plan. Full reconstruction is scheduled for Pine Street, North Washington Street, South Smalley Street and Center Street, while repaving is planned for Bay Lakes Road, Eberlein Park Drive and Arlington Street.
Other notable proposals include:
-
Public Works: A $175,000 rubber tire backhoe, a $50,000 pickup truck, and funding for annual sidewalk, sealcoat and crack repair.
-
Police Department: $133,350 for equipment, including two replacement squad cars ordered this year due to backlog, as well as new Tasers, radios, tactical gear, and squad cameras.
-
Fire Department: $75,000 for a new garage door and gear room remodel at the main station.
-
Rail Spur: $17,000 for annual repairs.
-
Parks and Recreation: $15,000 for baseball and softball diamond rehabilitation and land preparation at Woodlawn Cemetery.
Planning began as early as April due to rising rec center costs. In 2025, the city invested just over $3.1 million in projects. The 2026 capital plan will be finalized in November as part of the city budget.
