SHAWANO, WI – The Shawano Recreation Center has been closed since June, but city officials say the project to rebuild and expand the facility is moving forward steadily.
Parks and Recreation Director Matt Hendricks says demolition work has been the focus in recent weeks. “The racquetball court was torn down. The inside, you can basically see right through almost the entire building,” Hendricks explained, noting that many interior walls have been removed and portions of the roof are also coming down.
Despite the heavy deconstruction, Hendricks says residents will soon start to notice signs of progress. “Pretty soon, it’ll be pretty cool, we’ll start to see the steel go up,” he said. Foundations have already been poured for two new additions to the building, with structural work expected to begin in the coming weeks as more materials arrive.
The project marks a major investment in Shawano’s recreational facilities, aiming to provide upgraded amenities and a fresh space for community members once complete. While an official reopening date has not yet been set, the visible progress is moving the city one step closer to welcoming residents back through the Rec Center’s doors.
