NORTHEAST WISCONSIN – Powerful storms swept through Northeast Wisconsin on Wednesday, spawning three confirmed tornadoes and leaving behind pockets of destruction in several communities.
The strongest tornado, rated EF1, hit near Keshena in Menominee County. With peak winds of 90 miles per hour, it traveled more than seven miles, toppling trees and damaging the landscape before lifting about 10 minutes later.
Another EF1 tornado was confirmed near Gillett just after 5:30 p.m. It tore the roof off a metal building, damaged another, and snapped numerous trees along its 2.3-mile path.
A third tornado, an EF0, touched down west of Oconto at 6:00 p.m. It lasted four minutes, reaching winds of 77 miles per hour and causing tree damage, including on a golf course just outside the city.
The National Weather Service is also looking into storm activity near Lena, though no damage has been found so far to confirm a tornado in that area.
