SHAWANO, WI – As summer temperatures remain high, health officials are sounding the alarm over a noticeable increase in tick activity across Wisconsin.
Nick Mau, Health Director for Shawano-Menominee Counties, says the rise in tick sightings isn’t just seasonal, it’s tied to climate patterns and geography.
“Based on our region, the climate, and typically the more northern areas of the state, Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses become more prevalent,” Mau explained.
To help reduce the risk, Mau emphasizes the importance of prevention. That includes wearing long sleeves and pants to cover ankles and arms when outdoors, especially in wooded or grassy areas. He also recommends using bug repellents containing at least 20% DEET.
In addition to protective measures, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services offers helpful online resources on how to identify different types of ticks and recognize early signs of related illnesses.
With tick-borne diseases on the rise, officials are urging residents to stay informed and take precautions when spending time outside this summer.
