WITTENBERG, WI- Two women sustained life-threatening injuries and were airlifted to hospitals following a serious crash Sunday afternoon in Shawano County.
The Shawano County Dispatch Center received multiple 911 calls around 3:30 p.m. on June 22 reporting a crash near the County Road Q overpass above State Highway 29 in the Township of Wittenberg.
According to authorities, a vehicle carrying two occupants was traveling westbound on County Road Q (also known as Grand Avenue) when it left the roadway just before the overpass. The vehicle went down a hill, crossed all four lanes of Highway 29, became airborne, and rolled multiple times before coming to rest in a ditch along the eastbound side of the highway.
Both occupants were reportedly ejected during the crash. One of the individuals became trapped underneath the vehicle where it had landed.
Emergency crews from multiple agencies responded to the scene and immediately began extrication efforts. Both the driver and passenger were found conscious but suffering from serious, life-threatening injuries. They were transported by medical helicopter to nearby trauma centers for advanced treatment.
Authorities identified the driver as a 45-year-old woman from the Mattoon area and the passenger as a 20-year-old woman from Oshkosh.
The crash remains under investigation. No additional details about the cause of the crash or the current condition of the victims have been released.
