SHAWANO, WI- The sweet (and tangy) smell of friendly competition is in the air as the annual Rhubarb Fest returns to the Shawano County Historical Society grounds on Friday, June 21, and with it, one of the community’s most cherished traditions: the amateur rhubarb pie contest.
Pie Contest Coordinator Bonnie Splitt says the event is always a crowd favorite and encourages local bakers to join in.
“We’ve had as many as 17 pies entered in the past, and while some years are smaller, like last year’s seven entries, it really depends on the weather,” Splitt said. “But no matter what, it’s a fun event, and people mark it on their calendars.”
The contest is open to amateur bakers only, with one pie per person allowed. There’s no need to pre-register, just bring your rhubarb pie to the Shawano County Historical Society by 11:00 a.m. on June 21. Judging begins shortly after at 11:15.
And while the judges’ identities are known, the pie bakers remain anonymous to ensure fair and unbiased evaluations.
“The only prerequisite to being a judge,” Splitt laughed, “is that they love rhubarb, and they should come hungry.”
Pies are judged on presentation, crust quality, filling texture, and overall taste. Crusts can be crumbly or traditional pastry style, it’s entirely up to the baker. The only must-have ingredient? Rhubarb.
“Presentation is huge,” Splitt said. “Some pies come in with decorative lattice tops or creative garnishes that catch the eye before the first bite. And of course, the taste has to be just right, not runny, no off flavors, just a good, solid rhubarb filling.”
