SHAWANO, Wis. – Shawano County residents will have the opportunity to voice their opinions on a proposed $20 annual vehicle registration fee, commonly known as a “wheel tax,” during an informational meeting on Thursday, February 20, 2025, from 3:30 to 6:00 p.m. at Shawano County Room A/B, 311 N Main St., Shawano, WI.
County Board Chairman Thomas Kautza, Administrative Coordinator James Davel, and Highway Commissioner Grant Bystol will be present to provide an overview of the ordinance and answer questions. The meeting will include a public comment period with a time limit for each speaker.
The proposed Ordinance No. 1-25 aims to address rising costs in highway and bridge maintenance as state and federal funding continues to decline. If enacted, the $20 fee would apply to all motor vehicles customarily kept in Shawano County, generating funds specifically for road maintenance and infrastructure improvements. The fee would take effect January 1, 2026.
The ordinance was approved by the Shawano County Highway Committee on January 7, 2025, and later received approval from the Executive Committee on January 15, 2025. A final decision will be made by the Shawano County Board of Supervisors.
Residents are encouraged to attend the meeting to learn more about the proposal. The vote by the County Board will take place the following week.
