SHAWANO, WI- The force of strong southwest winds this week sent ice shanties gliding across Shawano Lake and triggered dramatic ice shoves along the shoreline, creating a striking winter spectacle.
The phenomenon, common in Northeast Wisconsin, occurs when fluctuating temperatures cause the ice to expand and contract, leading to cracks. When powerful winds arrive, they push large ice sheets toward the shore, stacking them into jagged formations known as ice shoves.
Anglers and lakefront residents witnessed the ice shanties shift unexpectedly as gusts swept across the frozen lake. While no injuries or major damage were reported, the event served as a reminder of nature’s power during the winter season.
