SHAWANO, WI- The Shawano School District approved closing open enrollment for special education for all ages for the 2025-2026 school year. Special Education Coordinator Brandi Genske said the last few years have been high, and this next year is not any different.
“We have zero space available for any area,” Genske told the school board on Monday. She said that includes all students ages 3-21.
Genske said they are already at a high student to teacher ratio.
Early Childhood at Hillcrest is projected at 29 students with two teachers equaling a 1-12 teacher to student ratio.
Grades K-2 have a projection of 61 students with 4 teachers equaling a 1:15 ratio
Grades 3-5 has 63 students projected with 3.5 teachers equaling a 1:15 ratio
Middle School has 52 students projected with 3 teachers equaling a 1:15 ratio.
High School has 108 students projected with 6 teachers equaling a 1:15 ratio.
Total, the Shawano School District is projecting 313 special education students with 18.5 teachers.
“20 percent of the school district is reported to have disabilities in need of special education,” Genske told the board.
