SHAWANO, WI- On Friday, November 15, the 5th Annual Shawano/Menominee County First Responders Ball of the Badges recognized outstanding service with several awards honoring first responders and their families. This year, three members of the Shawano Police Department were celebrated for their exceptional contributions.
Sergeant Scott Ruen received the Safe Haven-Jody Johnson-Behind the Badge Award for his unwavering commitment to supporting victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Sgt. Ruen actively connects victims with Safe Haven’s services, offering reassurance and a pathway to a safer future. His empathetic and straightforward approach helps survivors feel empowered to make protective decisions.
In one instance, his concern for a victim led to additional medical care, uncovering previously undetected injuries. Sgt. Ruen’s advocacy for Safe Haven, ongoing follow-ups, and support of victims highlight his dedication to their safety and healing.
Laura Chartraw, the department’s Clerical Lead, was honored with the Behind-the-Scenes Award for her indispensable role in keeping the department operational. Laura manages critical tasks, including coordinating with outside agencies, processing sensitive crime case files, and ensuring the accuracy of monthly crime reports to the State of Wisconsin and the FBI.
Her behind-the-scenes work also involves exposure to challenging investigations, including child abuse and death cases, making her a vital yet often unsung part of the department. Her meticulous attention to detail and commitment to excellence earned her this recognition.
Officer Mequon Frechette was named Officer of the Year for his heroism and professionalism during three life-saving incidents:
- In the first, Officer Frechette safely deescalated a situation involving a suicidal individual armed with a knife in a hospital parking lot, preventing potential harm.
- In the second, he played a critical role in rescuing an elderly man from a nursing home fire, saving his life through swift action.
- In the third, while off duty at a concert, Officer Frechette performed life-saving CPR on a man who had collapsed, restoring his pulse and breathing before medics arrived.
Officer Frechette’s dedication to his community and calmness under pressure exemplify the best of law enforcement.
The Shawano Police Department extends heartfelt congratulations to Sgt. Ruen, Laura, and Officer Frechette for their achievements and thanks them for their service to the community.
