SHAWANO, WI- Shawano County Coroner Brian Westphal reported that the county responded to three suicides in August. 2024 has already seen more suicides than 2023.
“We are up to 10 suicides in Shawano County and last year we had 5, so this year we have already doubled that and it’s only August,” said Shawano County Sheriff’ George Lenzner. He said there is lots of help available for people in need. “I think we have to remember that depression is more than just a bad day, it’s a mental illness, but it is also something that can be treated.

Last Thursday, they had a booth set up at Shawano Community High School for their annual Wellness Day, sharing mental health resources and reminding students how special they are. The group handed out Lifesavers as a symbol of hope.
Over the weekend, they also took part in the Shawano Farmer’s Market with a bake sale, raising awareness and funds for the cause.
Throughout town, people are putting up new yard signs that spread the word that you can TEXT, CALL or CHAT 9-8-8 if you or someone you know is in need of help.
The next event will be the Annual Remembrance Gathering, a heartfelt event for anyone affected by suicide. You can join to remember and honor loved ones through crafts, food, music, and a guest speaker. The event takes place on Thursday, September 26 from 5-7pm at the Shawano Civic Center.
“It’s really good for families that have been impacted by suicide,” said Sheriff Lenzner.
