SHAWANO, WI – Sunday evening, a 911 call reported two individuals in distress while tubing on the Wolf River, prompting a swift and coordinated response from community members and first responders that ultimately led to a successful rescue.
Justin and Katherine Popp, who were nearby, heard the cries for help from the two tubers. Acting swiftly, the couple attempted to navigate upriver to assist. Katherine immediately called 911, ensuring that help was on the way as quickly as possible.
Upon arrival, Deputy Steel of the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department displayed remarkable bravery by jumping into the river to assist an unresponsive female who had hit her head and was lying on the rocks. His quick action was crucial in providing the immediate help she needed.
The Shawano Area Fire Department responded rapidly with their airboat, transporting the injured individual to shore. EMTs from Shawano Ambulance Service were on standby, ready to provide medical attention.
“This was a true team effort,” said a spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Department. “The collaboration between community members and emergency responders was instrumental in ensuring a positive outcome.”
