MADISON, WI- Kaukauna’s Division 1 state softball dominance met an unexpected end Friday night. Riding a monumental 108-game winning streak, the Galloping Ghosts were in pursuit of their fourth consecutive state title. But in a stunning upset, Milton toppled the champions 5-3 in the state semifinals.
Key to their victory were two crucial errors by Kaukauna, resulting in three unearned runs.
Karly Meredith, Kaukauna’s star pitcher and two-time Gatorade Wisconsin Softball Player of the Year, allowed two earned runs, walked four, hit one batter, and struck out 12.
Kaukauna led 3-2 heading into the seventh inning. But Milton scored three runs in the final inning, capitalizing on a dropped infield pop-up that would have ended the game. Instead, it gave Milton a 5-3 lead.
Kaukauna’s final inning saw their three best hitters—Meredith, Taryn Christopher, and Jozy Ebben—come up to bat, but none managed to get a hit.
For Kaukauna, the loss was a rare and unfamiliar experience. Their last defeat was on May 18, 2021, against Neenah.
