SHAWANO, WI-The Shawano Police Department is set to welcome a new member to their team. In a unanimous decision on May 8, the Shawano Common Council approved the department’s request to acquire a therapy dog. Officer Brandi Hoffman will undertake the training and care of the dog, leveraging its services both as a school resource officer and in situations requiring therapeutic support.
Police Chief Bradley Rabideau revealed that the litter of puppies, expected to be hypoallergenic labradoodles, was recently born in early May. Unlike the existing police K-9s, which serve as patrol dogs, the therapy dog will focus on providing emotional support and wellness, both within the department and the broader community.
Rabideau emphasized the invaluable role of therapy dogs in diffusing tense or traumatic situations, particularly in aiding communication and calming individuals experiencing distress. This resource will be particularly beneficial in schools and other community settings where individuals may require emotional support.
Funding for the therapy dog primarily comes from donations, with the police department only responsible for a minimal $200 contribution. Rabideau noted the kennel’s extensive experience in providing therapy dogs to law enforcement agencies, emphasizing the special significance of the dog’s lineage, with ties to a former police K-9 handler.
To compensate Officer Hoffman for her care of the dog, the department has arranged for additional paid time off or a lump sum payment at the end of the year, in compliance with federal regulations. Unlike police K-9s, which require outdoor kennels, the therapy dog will have an indoor kennel, reflecting its more family-friendly nature and lower maintenance requirements.
