WAUPACA, WI- Three members of the Waupaca County Sheriff’s Department were recently presented with Life Saving Awards.
On June 12, 2023, at around 2:05 am, critical situation unfolded in the village of Scandinavia, Waupaca County, Wisconsin. The Waupaca County Communications Center received a silent 911 call, leaving Telecommunicator Kirk Merrill to handle the emergency. Acting swiftly, Merrill utilized the call’s coordinates to pinpoint its location.
Deputies Eric Kamholz and Mitch Butterbrodt were promptly dispatched to the identified address. Upon arrival, they encountered challenges as attempts to establish communication with the caller proved futile. Meanwhile, Telecommunicator Merrill’s investigation revealed alarming details from a prior call, where a female resident had expressed intent to commit suicide in a running vehicle within the garage.
With this crucial information, deputies proceeded to the garage where they discovered an unconscious woman in the vehicle, subjected to extreme temperatures estimated at 120-130 degrees Fahrenheit due to the running engine. Acting decisively, the deputies turned off the vehicle and ventilated the garage, aiding the woman’s gradual recovery.
However, the danger wasn’t over yet. The woman made further attempts at self-harm, but the vigilant deputies intervened, preventing any further harm. They administered immediate medical assistance until EMS arrived, facilitating her safe transport to the hospital.
