SHAWANO, WI- Tuesday, nearly two dozen Hillcrest Primary students chose dressing up as a police officer as their future career of choice.
The dress up day was part of Read Across America Week.
“There is no greater compliment and it warms my heart to see them,” Shawano Resource Officer Tyler Thornborrow said. “To see all these kids get excited about it and to develop relationships with the kids at this level, that is the goal.”
Officer Tyler has made a positive impact on these kids and many are excited to see him walk the halls of school.
“Mostly at this age, they want to protect people and help people, and that is a pretty cool thing because that is what they view me as doing for them.”
Thornborrow said that is why many chose to dress up. He says it is also important for the future of police work. He says the interest level has dropped.
“When I first got hired about 18 years ago, there was 300 to 400 applicants for two positions,” Thornborrow said. “That is no longer the case.”
Thornborrow also spends time at the High School. He says the relationship with students that age is different but still as important.
