TOWN OF NAVARINO, WI- A wildfire broke out on March 7th, 2024, at around 11:35 am, in the area of Wildwood Rd near Townline Rd in the Township of Navarino. Shawano County Deputies swiftly responded to the emergency call, only to discover a rapidly spreading wildfire engulfing a substantial amount of acreage.
Upon arrival, deputies encountered a distressing scene as they were met by an individual who had sustained burn-related injuries. The injured woman reported that her husband remained in the vicinity where the fire was actively burning. Deputies entered the reported area and tragically found the male individual deceased. The woman was promptly transported to a medical facility via ambulance for treatment of her injuries.
Investigations revealed that the couple had been burning brush in a designated burn pit before the fire spiraled out of control, leading to the catastrophic incident. Fire crews were quick to respond and managed to bring the blaze under control, preventing further destruction.
The Shawano County Sheriff’s Office Detectives are currently handling the death investigation aspect of this incident, while the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources – Forestry Division is overseeing the fire investigation. As of now, both segments of the investigation remain active, and no additional information has been released.
Assistance on the scene was provided by various emergency response agencies, including the Wisconsin DNR, Navarino-Lessor Fire Department, Clintonville Ambulance, and the Shawano County Coroner’s Office.
