SHIOCTON, WI-In a recent two-question referendum, Shiocton community members have approved surpassing revenue limits, allocating $7.4 million over the next three school years for operational costs within the School District of Shiocton. The vote, with 742 in favor and 644 against (53.5% to 46.5%), will cover essential expenses like utilities, routine maintenance, curriculum, extracurricular activities, staff salaries, and day-to-day operational needs. Notably, the current operational referendum is set to expire at the end of this school year.
However, the second question regarding $35.8 million in facility improvements did not garner community support, as 789 (56.8%) voted against it, while 601 (43.2%) were in favor.
The proposed facility upgrades, including a new playground, secure entryways, a technical education space, a varsity gym, and various improvements, faced opposition, potentially driven by concerns over increased taxes. If both referendums had passed, taxpayers could have seen a $1.97 per $1000 of property value increase, resulting in a $394 hike for a homeowner with a $200,000-valued house.
