SHAWANO, WI- A public involvement meeting held on December 7 has opened the floor for ongoing feedback on proposed options for an essential State Highway 22 improvement project. The project encompasses an 11.5-mile stretch between County Road BE and the Oconto County border with Shawano County.
Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT) officials have outlined the primary objectives of the proposed project, emphasizing the need to repave the road and replace aging culverts and guardrails. Notable enhancements include converting a four-lane segment between Warrington Avenue and County Road R into two lanes with designated left-turn lanes. Additionally, a left-turn lane is slated for installation at Resort Road, along with essential deck repairs on the bridge spanning Pickerel Creek.
Scheduled for construction in 2026, the project addresses concerns about the existing pavement, which exhibits signs of distress such as cracking and rutting. Officials warn that these issues could escalate, posing safety hazards, particularly during adverse weather conditions, and contribute to accelerated pavement deterioration by allowing water seepage.
