MADISON, WI- Preliminary data released by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources on Tuesday revealed a notable decrease in the number of deer harvested by hunters compared to the previous year. The nine-day gun deer season, which concluded on Sunday, recorded a 17.6% drop in the 2023 totals compared to 2022 and an 11% decline from the five-year average.
Hunters registered a total of 173,942 deer during the season, comprising 85,390 antlered and 88,552 antlerless specimens. The buck harvest specifically saw a 14.7% reduction compared to 2022, mirroring the same percentage increase observed from 2021 to 2022. This downturn in harvest figures suggests a noteworthy shift in deer population dynamics, prompting further analysis by wildlife experts and conservationists.
