SHAWANO, WI- The Shawano Community Library staff is eagerly awaiting the final results of a mold test conducted at the library building. Although preliminary findings from the test, conducted by NorthStar Environmental Testing, indicate the absence of black mold, library director Nancy Bell anticipates receiving conclusive results in the coming days.
Black mold, known for its toxic properties, is commonly found in cellulose-rich materials like gypsum-based drywall and wallpaper, typically in structures that have experienced dampness or water damage. Concerns about mold growth in the library, possibly exacerbated by foundation cracks, have triggered discussions about potential closures, temporary relocations, and the construction of a new facility.
In 2017, Shawano County and the city of Shawano reached an agreement whereby the county assumed responsibility for the library building. At that time, a mold study indicated varying levels of mold within the structure. Interestingly, both past and current studies reveal that the types of mold present inside the library are consistent with those found outside.
To mitigate moisture-related concerns, the library currently operates three dehumidifiers aimed at reducing humidity levels in the air. As the community awaits the final mold test results, the future plans for the Shawano Community Library remain contingent on the conclusive findings and the subsequent recommendations that may emerge.
