SHAWANO, WI- Dennis Bohm of Shawano has been honored as the 2023 Shawano County Veteran Advocate of the Year, according to an announcement by Paul Pionke, Shawano County’s Veterans Service Officer. Bohm is receiving this accolade in recognition of his exceptional commitment and service to the local veteran community.
A notable contribution of Bohm’s is his role as a volunteer driver for disabled veterans under the auspices of the Shawano County Veterans Service Office. For nearly two decades, he has been providing transportation for veterans to VA clinics located in Appleton, Green Bay, and Milwaukee.
“Throughout this extended period, he has logged approximately 250,000 miles behind the wheel, ensuring that veterans can safely attend their VA appointments, regardless of weather conditions,” said Pionke.
Dennis Bohm has a deep-seated commitment to the veteran community, demonstrated through his lifelong membership in several veteran organizations, including the Disabled American Veterans, American Legion, and AMVETS. Additionally, he is an associated member of the Vietnam Veterans of America. Bohm served as the AMVETS commander for seven years and currently holds the position of American Legion chaplain. He has devoted numerous hours to the solemn duty of participating in honor guard duties at the funerals of fellow service members, including the presentation of the flag to the widows of veterans.
Bohm’s community involvement extends beyond veterans’ organizations, as he also took on the role of opening night speaker at the recent Shawano County Fair and served as the honor guard commander, responsible for posting the colors on the fair’s opening night. He is an active member of the Soldiers and Sailors Committee, where he diligently works to ensure that veterans in need receive assistance, whether in the form of information or potential financial aid during challenging times.
