WAUPACA, WI-In light of the ongoing and severe drought conditions, as well as the growing threat of wildfires, the State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has chosen to reimpose the necessity for burning permits. This decision is formalized through a Special Fire Order that will impact multiple counties, including Waupaca, Waushara, Portage, and nine others.
The reinstatement of burning permits went into effect at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, September 18, within designated DNR protection zones. These measures will remain in effect until further notice.
Individuals seeking to engage in burning activities, such as those involving barrels, debris piles, or grassy and wooded areas as specified by the permit, are now obligated to obtain a DNR annual burning permit. This requirement is in place unless the ground is entirely blanketed by snow. Prior to initiating any burning activities in these specified regions, individuals must acquire a DNR burn permit and consult the WisBURN app for the latest updates on burn restrictions.
Traditionally, DNR burning permits are mandated in extensive protection areas from January 1 through May 31, provided that there is no snow cover on the ground. The reinstatement of these permits empowers the DNR to take action to suspend burning activities on specific days during periods of heightened wildfire risk.
It’s worth noting that a DNR burning permit is not needed for campfires intended for cooking or warmth. However, the public is strongly advised to exercise extreme care and caution when participating in such activities, given the increased fire danger.
