WAUPACA, WI- The trial for a man accused of killing a teen for stealing his pets is underway in Waupaca County. William Zelenski is charged with first-degree intentional homicide for the October 19, 2020 shooting of Ryelee Manente-Powell.
Opening statements in the trial started on Monday, with the trial scheduled for a week.
The state explained that are looking to prove that Zelenski intended to kill Manente-Powell, while the defenseĀ says because some of his weapons were missing along with his exotic pets, Zelenski feared for his life.
Others have already been sentenced in the case. The mother of the victim, Tiffany Powell was sentenced to 15 years in prison for her role in the incident, after it was determined that she pointed a gun at her son. Ashton Tody was placed on probation for three years after it was learned that he worked with Manente-Powell to steal a crocodile, lizard, snakes and other items.
