SHAWANO, WI- Disposing of flags has a proper process, and last week, thousands of flags from the Shawano area were properly disposed of.
Joe Schwobe, Commander of the American Legion Post 117 says they have to be burned. “This is the only proper way to do it.”
The ceremony takes place every year on Flag Day. Flags that have become torn or damaged are saved for the annual ceremony.
Schwobe said they did not count the number of flags, but last year they disposed of about 5 thousand flags and had five tables full. Schwobe said this year, they had 9 tables.
Different groups assisted the American Legion with the disposal process.
