Four Shawano Athletes Win Bay Conference Top Honor

SHAWANO, WI- The Shawano Winter Sports team was recognized for their successes this winter sports season on Monday, however this season goes down as one of the more successful in a long time.

At the Bay Conference All-Conference meetings, opposing coaches selected four Shawano Athletes as the best player of the year in Conference.

For Boys Basketball, Michael Metcalf-Grassman was named Co-Player of the Year with Alex Sherwood of Xavier. Metcalf-Grassman led the Hawks in scoring, was second in the conference season in scoring and led other Bay Conference categories as well. As a whole, MMG was 2nd in scoring all season, including non-conference games. He also became the 8th member of the Shawano Boys Basketball to join the 1000 point scoring club. He was an unanimous First Team All-Conference selection.

In addition, Brandon Reed turned some heads with his defensive style of play this season and was named Bay Conference Defensive Player of the Year. Reed was tasked with guarding the opponents best players each night and often shut them down to lower than their scoring average.

Leah Nordin was named Co-Defensive Player of the Year in her Freshman season. She shared the honors with Sophomore Ella Francois of West De Pere and Senior Mara Rieder of Menasha. Nordin was a unanimous First Team All-Conference selection.

Senior Caden Young did not lose a conference match in all four years of high school, including his Freshman year at Clintonville. Young finished his season ranked, and was second place at the WIAA State Wrestling Tournament for Division 1 170 pounds. He was named wrestler of the year for the Bay Conference and was also 1st Team All-Conference once again.
