SHAWANO, WI- The Shawano School District has seen an increase in student absences due to flu season.
“It’s an increase from where we normally are at this point. We are seeing an earlier flu season right now,” said Interim Superintendent Kurt Krizan.
In a letter to parents, Krizan said students should stay home if they have influenza symptoms such as fever, headache, extreme tiredness, muscle aches, dry cough, sore throat, as well as runny or stuffy nose. Other symptoms could also include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
“Make sure if the kids are not feeling good, keep them home so that we can make sure we are keeping them safe and keeping the other students and staff safe.”
It was advised that students with a fever go fever free without the use of medication for 24 hours before returning. Students with vomiting or diarrhea should stay home until they go 24 hours without an episode. Students who test positive for COVID-19 should stay home for 5 days after symptoms start and return on Day 6 as long as they are fever and symptom free.
He says the recommendation from the school nurses is that students and staff are symptom free for 24 hours before returning to the classroom.
