SHAWANO, WI- A former Shawano County campground owner who is facing charges in Shawano County says she is broke and homeless after posting bond.
Ann Retzlaff appeared in Shawano County Court by Zoom from a location in Sauk County on Thursday, making her first court appearance since being released on a $16,900 dollar bond.
The purpose of the status conference was to see if Retzlaff was able to obtain an attorney, but Retzlaff told the court that she has no money to pay for one after posting bond.
“It took everything that I had and I even had to sell my truck to come up with the $16,900 cash and I have nothing to live on,” Retzlaff said. “I am officially homeless and my business is being stolen from me.”
Retzlaff told the courts that she has been attempting to find someone to defend her.
“I am not operating my campground. I have no access to the business accounts and none of the revenue and it has been taken from me without due process of law, but because I have the campground, I do not qualify for a public defender so I do need help with this.”
District Attorney Greg Parker suggested that the court could appoint Retzlaff an attorney or allow her to have access to the cash that she posted to pay for an attorney.
“I would allow for that to happen.” the judge said.
“I do not feel safe under the circumstances with returning to Shawano County until this is resolved,” Retzlaff said.
Retzlaff was given more time to find an attorney in Sauk County or work with the courts to find a court appointed attorney. She will be back in court on September 13.
Retzlaff was informed that a court appointed attorney would cost about $100.00 dollars an hour.
