WAUPACA, WI- The swim advisory for South Park Beach in Waupaca was lifted on Saturday. Investigation into the cause of the illness outbreak associated with South Park Beach continued throughout the past week. The investigation included visual inspections of beach conditions, lake water testing, interviews, and testing symptomatic individuals for suspect pathogens. The investigation revealed the likely cause of the outbreak due to the pathogen norovirus. The results are not considered conclusive, but likely.
The advisory was lifted with considerations that the lake has been under a swim advisory for 7 days since the last report of an individual reporting illness and it is also likely that any virus in the lake water may have dissolved through the lake’s natural filtration and turnover. Swimmers are being asked to consider extra precautions including;
- Not swimming while experiencing symptoms of diarrhea or vomiting.
- Not swallowing recreational swim water including pools, hot tubs, water playgrounds, oceans, lakes and rivers.
- Take kids on bathroom breaks and check diapers every hour.
- Frequent handwashing
