SHAWANO, WI- Scammers are back at it again. The Shawano County Sheriff’s Office is reminding people to be cautious when being approached for money.
“Wiring money is like sending somebody cash in the mail,” Shawano County Sheriff Chief Deputy George Lenzner said.
He said the scams themselves and scammers sound very convincing. “They will tell you that you won a prize, but you have to pay a fee or your taxes first or that a friend or family member is in trouble and needs money. Scammers are good at being friendly and good at fooling people, so don’t send them money.”
Recently, a scam occurred on Facebook where someone made a fake profile of somebody else and got a hold of their friends list. The friends were asked to send money to help the person out. It was reported that once somebody starting questioning the motives of the request, the scammer started acting upset in their responses.
Lenzner says there is not much that can be done once you wire the money.
