
Horace “aka Ed or Hal” Hirt, age 72 of Tigerton passed away Friday, September 24, 2021, at House of the Dove – Hospice House in Marshfield.
Horace William Hirt was born on December 30, 1948, at Clintonville Hospital to Ernest and Betty (Genskow) Hirt. He grew up and attended school in Tigerton. Ed entered the U.S. Army and served stateside for some time. He was united in marriage on September 4, 1971, to Judith M. Kohn at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Wittenberg. The couple made their home in Tigerton and his wife Judy preceded him in death on August 31, 1993.
In his early days, Ed worked a short time at Marion Plywood and Tigerton Lumber Company. He was employed first at Bernitt’s Auto Salvage and then with Zeb’s Auto Salvage, Tigerton, for well over 20 years. Ed also worked several years for Dave Nero Construction. Finally, he worked for a number of years with his son helping whitewash dairy farms all around the area.
Ed always enjoyed the outdoors, whether he was hunting, fishing, or trapping. He was a true handyman who could fix just about anything. He liked taking old fishing poles and rebuilding them into new ones. Ed was a skilled wood carver and made all sorts of ducks and frogs. He also built beautiful windmills and bird houses or feeders. He loved spending time with his family and friends.
Survivors include one son, Jesse (Tamra) Hirt of Split Rock; and a grandson, Colten Hirt. He is further survived by many other relatives and friends. Ed was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Judy; his father and mother-in-law, Ervin and Frieda Kohn; one brother Herman Hirt; and two brothers-in-law, David (Lauretta) Kohn and Eugene Bricco.
Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 9th at 11:00 AM at Beil-Didier Funeral Home, Tigerton. Rev. Sharon Fox-Bogen will officiate and inurnment will follow at Union Cemetery, Tigerton. Visitation will be on Saturday from 9:00 AM until time of service at the funeral home.
