BONDUEL, WI- The alligator (Rex) who has been missing over the weekend from Doc’s Zoo in Bonduel has been found. Owner Steven (Doc) Hopkins said the alligator was found just before 5:00pm on Monday.
Doc’s son was the one who found him in some water about 800 feet from the gator home.
“We were in that area before looking, but we just did not go in deep enough.”
Doc said they had to put a strap around him and brought him back to the pen. He said they noticed an area in the corner of the pen where it is possible that he escaped from.
“We are getting him home and making some immediate changes to the pen,” Doc said.
Throughout the day, they have been using different tactics to help locate Rex. Volunteer crews spent time searching throughout Doc’s 72 acre property. The group tried tracking him with dogs, getting his attention with raw chicken and setting up cameras in areas that he may be.
The rainy start to the day added some difficultly to the search since alligators would like to hunker down in the water when it is cold and cloudy. Doc says he was hoping for afternoon sun to help the search.
The alligator is quite heavy so it takes 6-8 people to lift him to transport him.
