A sexual assault advocacy center is now open on the Menominee Indian Reservation. Courtney Carlton is a sexual assault advocate for the Menominee County Human Service Department. She says victims are often silenced by fear and embarrassment after an attack. They blame themselves or the attacker blames them. The center is set up to offer survivors the resources they need to move forward. It has a sexual assault nurse examiner on staff. Before it opened, victims would have to drive all the way to Green Bay or Appleton to have a forensic examination. The U-S government says more than half of American Indian and Alaska Native women have experienced sexual violence in their lifetime.
