SHAWANO, WI- The Shawano School District has decided to stay in virtual education for the rest of 2020.
The school administration decided to remain virtual until at least January 4, 2021.
“We have studied our current local health data, completed a detailed review of the Shawano School District’s re-entry plan, along with the established gating criteria for the district, and based on this information, we have made the decision to remain in a virtual environment,” Superintendent Randi Anderson said. “As always, this decision is based upon the health and safety of our students, staff, families and community.”
Anderson said over the past several weeks they have worked closely with students and families, and feedback has helped them understand concerns and daily struggles during the virtual instruction model.
“We also know it is difficult to see smaller schools in our area return to in-person instruction and want to reassure you that returning our students to in-person learning is our priority as soon as it is safe to do so.”
The Shawano School District was scheduled to complete virtual education on Friday of this week. Next week is Thanksgiving Break and some school districts in Northeast Wisconsin have decided to go virtual for one or two weeks after Thanksgiving to allow time for people to monitor symptoms or get tested after visiting family. There is only three weeks between Thanksgiving Break and Christmas Break.
During the virtual period, the district will continue to work with families to bring in students in small cohorts to better serve their needs, Offer internet Cafes for those having internet issues, continue working with special education students and hold 1-on-1 scheduled sessions for families that need help troubleshooting technology issues.
The school district will also continue the free breakfast and free lunch program during the week and on weekends.
“Please remember, it will take the community working together to help bring all of our students back into our school buildings including frequent hand washing, physical distancing, covering coughs and sneezes, use of face coverings in public and staying home as much as possible.”
