Catharine “Cathy” Anton, age 80, of Embarrass passed away on Wednesday, November 11, 2020, after a short stay with family at her side at ThedaCare Regional Medical Center, Appleton.
The former Catharine Ann Hoefert was born on September 12, 1940 at Leasum Hospital in Sturgeon Bay, Door County, to Carl “Charlie” and Agnes (Weiss) Hoefert. She grew up in the Baileys Harbor area and graduated from Gibraltar High School in Fish Creek. Cathy went on to UW Stout earning a degree in Home Economics. She taught English, Math and Science for a short time at Marion Middle School. Cathy was united in marriage on June 11, 1960 to Wallace R. Anton at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Baileys Harbor. In 1962, the couple started Anton Excavating in Embarrass where she managed the books and finances for many years. By the late 1960’s, Cathy opened Anton Jewelry in Clintonville, which she owned and operated until the early 1980’s. She then went to Wisconsin Power & Light, where she was employed as a meter reader until her retirement.
Cathy was always looking for and getting involved with new business opportunities. Cathy and Wally raised close to 60 Belgian Blue Beef Cattle on their land. She also spent many years selling J.R. Watkins Products to countless folks all around the area. You could never tell Cathy that something would not work; she always found a way to make it work.
Cathy was a longtime member of Zion Lutheran Church, Embarrass, where she helped out in the past with the Ladies Aid and taught Sunday School. Her interests included sewing, knitting, working in her garden, and canning whatever she grew. But Cathy especially enjoyed the outdoors, whether it was gun deer hunting or fishing off the dock, up north, on the Wisconsin River.
Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Wally; and two children, Laura (Jim) Bolden of Kiel, and Russ (Chris) Anton of Embarrass. There are seven grandchildren: Austin (Emily) Bolden, Tanner (friend Laura) Bolden, Hannah Bolden, Laney Anton, Cole (friend Avery) Anton, Laura Lukoski, and Luke Lukoski. She is further survived by a sister-in-law, Rhona Anton of Appleton; a brother-in-law, Jerome Smith of North Carolina; many other relatives and friends. Cathy was preceded in death by her parents; a sister-in-law Eunice Smith; and a brother-in-law, William Anton.
**UPDATE** A Private family-only Funeral Service will be held. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. There will be no visitation.
