SHAWANO, WI- The Shawano Common Council made a unanimous vote to keep Haloween Trick or Treating in place for October 31, 2020.
Trick or Treating was originally scheduled to take place in the evening from 5:00-7:00pm and no changes were made to the schedule.
“This is not something that we can enforce anyway,” said Alderperson Lisa Hoffman. “People are still going to do it if they want to.”
The discussion hinged upon the message that the city was sending by keeping Trick or Treating in place.
“I think as leaders in our community we need to express the importance of following social distance guidelines if we go through with this,” said Alderperson Rhonda Strebel.
Jeanne Cronce said there are always alternative options like a movie at the fairgrounds or “Trunk or Treat” where people go from car-to-car parked six feet from each other.
“I think we just leave it up to the families. If you don’t want kids at your house, turn your light off and parents that do not want their kids to go out, that is their choice,” said Alderperson Seth Mailahn.”
Mailahn made the motion to continue through with original plans for Halloween.
The council members all agreed that this year it will be important for people to only visit houses that have their lights on.
