
Garland H. Sturms, age 93, of Marion went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, September 3, 2020 at Greentree Health & Rehabilitation Center, Clintonville.
Garland Howard Sturms was born on October 16, 1926 in Huntington, West Virginia, to Carl and Ernestine (March) Sturms. As a young man his family moved to Baltimore, Maryland, where he attended high school and then went on to three years of Bible study school. Garland also went to Vocational School for the electrical trade. For some years he did electrical refurbishing of ships at the Coast Guard Yard in Curtis Bay, MD.
Garland was united in marriage on June 14, 1952 to Georgia R. Wulk at the Methodist Church in Marion. The couple settled in Marion where he worked for close to 20 years at Marion Body Works mostly making doors for trucks. He then was employed for a number of years at Marion Plywood, until his retirement in 1994. After retiring, the couple made numerous mission trips all around the world.
Garland’s deep faith led him to be an active member of Bethany Evangelical Free Church in Clintonville. He served as a Deacon in the congregation and always loved to praise God with his voice. As a young man in Baltimore, he enjoyed singing with the “Youth for Christ” choir, and in his later years was honored for the once in a lifetime chance to sing with the Billy Graham Choir in Chicago.
His other interests included the Clintonville Amateur Ham Radio Club and he also served as a board member for CAP Services of Waupaca County for 10 years. Garland was good with electrical wiring in anything and was handy with many carpentry projects as well. Whenever possible throughout his life he donated blood and will always be remembered as a generous and kind person.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Georgia; and three children, Grace Riedinger of Marion, Gareth Sturms of Tigerton, and Gary Sturms of Marion. There is one granddaughter, Kharis (Sam) Schultz of Appleton; one sister, Jean Dietz of Philadelphia, PA; and one sister-in-law, Joan (Harry) Joren of Marion. He is further survived by many other relatives and friends. Garland was preceded in death by his parents; a sister Margie Sturms; and a brother-in-law, Herbert Dietz.
Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 12th at 11:00 AM at Beil-Didier Funeral Home in Clintonville. Rev. Kurt Hettinga will officiate, and inurnment will be at Greenleaf Cemetery in Marion. Visitation will be on Saturday from 10:00 AM until time of service at the funeral home.
