SHAWANO, WI -A member of the Green Bay Packer 1996 Super Bowl team was a guest speaker at a church event Tuesday in Shawano. Former kicker Chris Jacke spoke to a group of kids and parents at Hope Community Church Summer Blast. The crowd got to ask some questions and the discussion centered around getting advice.
“Mike Holmgren’s advice was don’t miss the field goal,” Jacke joked. “My advice is to take care of yourself, eat right, do the right things, work out right, and don’t hang around with the wrong people.”
Jacke also talked about how a man of God, Reggie White, changed their locker room in the early ’90s.
The Packers were one game away from the playoffs after the 1989 season and had high expectations for the next year. Jacke said it did not work out well, and the team finished below .500 two straight years.
“There were guys turning on each other and they were not helping each other and everything was about them and Reggie came into Green Bay and changed that. Through his love of God and the preaching that he did, he turned that locker room around.”
Jacke talked about what he misses the most about his playing days.
“It is the interaction with the fans. A lot of guys say the money, and don’t get me wrong, the money is nice, but what I am most afraid of is going to an event like this and none of you know who I am.”
Summer Blast is usually a multi-day church summer camp with lessons and messes.
Tuesday night, kids did get messy playing games with their parents and some adults got to show how brave they were by eating flavored crickets.
Summer Blast is open to the entire community each year.
