SHAWANO, WI – The City of Shawano Common Council is beginning a process to fill a seat that is being left vacant.
Alderman Jeff Easter is resigning from the Council due to moving out of state, leaving the seat open.
The City Council decided to allow any resident of District 1 apply to fill the seat for the remainder of the term.
“Because of paperwork filing and those requirements, we would not be able to complete the process until next April anyway.”
Nemetz says Easter’s term was scheduled to end in April of 2021.
“That individual who gets appointed would have the opportunity to run for re-election then.”
Easter was elected to the Shawano Common Council in the 2019 Spring Election, replacing Bob Kurkiewicz who decided not to run for re-election that year.
District 1 is located in the Northwest side of the city. From West Division Street to the north end of the city limits and areas east of the Wolf River, North of Highway 22 to Ellis Street.
Applications are due by email, mail or in person.
“They are requesting that the application be submitted by 4:00 PM July 1st and that way we get an idea of who is interested in filling the seat,” City Clerk Lesley Nemetz said.
Applications can be emailed to lnemetz@cityofshawano.com, or can be sent via mail or in person to Shawano City Hall, 127 S. Sawyer Street, Shawano.
The City of Shawano Personnel Committee will look through all applications and make a recommendation to the Common Council on who should fill the seat.
The council had the option to leave the seat vacant until the end of the term, but Nemetz says they did not wnt to do that.
“They want to have a full board and to have all of the city residents represented by an individual.”
