WITTENBERG, WI – A crash near Wittenberg Tuesday evening resulted in the death of a Schofield area woman.
The woman was a passenger in one of the vehicles and was airlifted to the hospital and later pronounced deceased.
Sheriff Officials responded to County Q east of Cardinal Lane around 6:00pm after a two vehicle crash occurred.
Sheriff Officials learned that a 48-year-old Wittenberg man was traveling eastbound on County Q when he crossed the center line and struck a vehicle head on.
Shawano County Sheriff Adam Bieber says the crash remains under investigation.
“The officers on scene did not have any kind of indication that alcohol was involved, but a blood sample was taken.”
An 83-year-old Weston area woman was driving the other vehicle and is reported to be in stable condition after being transported to a Wausau area hospital.
The condition of the Wittenberg man is unknown.
The fatality marks the first one on a Shawano County roadway this year.
“We have gone five months without a fatal and normally we have one or two by this time. This is a good start for us, but we are prepared for there to be more, generally there is,” Sheriff Bieber said.
Bieber says COVID-19’s impact on travel may have played a factor in the last month.
