Memorial Day Ceremonies were held in the area. Shawnao and Clintonville each held one, but they were done differently.
Shawano kept their ceremony open to the public, while Clintonville held theirs on Facebook Live.
In Shawano, one change that was made was the canceling of the parade.
Dennis Bohm served as Master or Cermonies and the morning included the National Anthem as well as the Pledge of Allegiance. Brent Miller, Shawano County Administrative Coordinator served as the speaker.
“One of the most horrible things is saying goodbye to a brother or sister in arms who has given their life and service to this country.”
He also took time to explain the freedoms that our fallen soldiers died for, which are displayed in the Bill of Rights.
“Those freedoms include freedom of religion, freedom of speech, The right to keep and bare arms, protection against unreasonable searches or seizures, the right to plead the fifth as well as the right to a speedy trial.”
In Clintonville, the presentation was done by Mayor Rich Beggs. He started by giving a little history of why Memorial Day is remembered.
“People began to clamor for a special day to remember those who had fallen,” he said. “It is a day to remember all of those who have served their country and have passed away.”
Mayor Beggs was on site with Fr. Tim Shillcox from St. Rose Parish as well as Tara Fietch Huber and Ben Huber who performed the music. Taps was pre-recorded. Clintonville’s ceremony included the reading of the names of the veterans who have died since last Memorial Day.
In Shawano, the traditional wreath laying took place.
Both speakers took time to tell people to never forget.
“They saw how great this country is and wanted to protect or freedoms,” said Beggs.
“We as soldiers never forget because we know that it could have easily been us,” said Miller.
There is a moment of silence scheduled for 3:00pm on Monday.
