MADISON, WI – (The Mid-West Farm Report) – The National Defense Production Act will be put into effect to order the nation’s meat plants to remain open, according to multiple reports.
The report indicates that President Donald Trump is expected to issue the order in part to overcome liability concerns expressed by Tyson Foods Inc., which is among the country’s biggest processors. The order is expected to apply to beef, poultry, pork and eggs, but not be limited to Tyson plants.
Coronavirus illnesses among workers in processing plants have resulted in the closing of many of the nation’s largest processing plans which has, in turn, decreased meat supplies in grocery stores across the country.
The issue hit close to home in Green Bay with the closing of JBS after a COVID-19 outbreak.
The JBS plant closed voluntarily on Sunday.
Brown County Public Health reports 255 of the plant’s more than 1,200 workers have tested positive for COVID-19. The outbreak is also linked to 79 other cases in people who don’t work at the plant.
