SHAWANO, WI – The Wisconsin Department of Transportation has approved additional funding for the Shawano County Highway Department to proceed with the increased vertical and horizontal clearance for the Cty HHH Bridge over the Shawano Creek.
“We are proceeding with a design to have a 7.1′ vertical clearance and two-way boat traffic as there will be a pier and additional waterway width,” said Shawano County Highway Commissioner Grant Bystol. “The current existing structure depending on water level is roughly five feet and we have identified that as a safety problem.”
He says width will also be improved.
“We are going to have two 12 foot lanes plus 10 feet on each side to accommodate snowmobiles, bicycles, and pedestrian because in the wintertime, snowmobiles always cross at this location.”
Design and approvals from State and Federal agencies will take 10-14 months and no plans are available at this time.
“We are in preliminary design stages here but you might as well say roughly a year out from the final design.”
The topic was well watched as the discussions with the general public began last year.
“We had a public information meeting in October of 2019 and had roughly 200 in attendance and had many more comments after that.”
Construction is planned for the summer of 2022.
“We are going to do our best to minimize impacts to everybody using this area and that structure.”
