(Wisconsin Radio Network) – Governor Tony Evers directed the Department of Natural Resources to close several state parks to protect the health and safety of Wisconsinites.
The announcement was made Thursday due to unprecedented crowds, litter, vandalism and out of an abundance of caution to protect public health and safety and help flatten the curve.
Included Wisconsin State Parks, Forests and Recreational Areas will close at the end of the day Thursday, April 9, and will remain closed beginning Friday, April 10, until further notice.
In the Northeast Region, High Cliff State Park is included.
The Governor said although he wanted to keep parks open, the situation has reached a point where public safety in the parks and surrounding communities takes precedence over keeping these locations open.
If the public does not follow social distancing guidelines and vandalizes property, more state parks may have to close.
Campgrounds in Waupaca County have been ordered to shut down.
The order, issued by County Health Officer Jed Wohlt, is to take effect immediately, in an effort to reduce the spread of the coronavirus.
Waupaca County Sheriff Tim Wilz says it will be up to the campground owners to get campers to pick up go home.
Wilz says if those staying in campers refuse to leave after being told, his officers will get involved.
