SHAWANO, WI – This years supply of poinsettias at Shawano Community High School sold quickly and it only took a couple of days to move them from the greenhouse to homes and businesses.
The process is one that agriculture teacher Melissa Goers says is full of education.
“This was a daily thing that they had to do and we incorporate science and math and they had to chart the growth.”
Morgan Weinig said the process was the most exciting.
“Everyday when we had class we spent a lot of time making sure they looked really nice,” “It was really interesting to see the different process of how they started really little and now they are big and beautiful.
Student Maddie Koehler says it was fun and exciting class project.
“I grew ten poinsettias and I had to make sure if they had broke limbs that we take them off and if there were leaves we would pick them off.”
“We started with small plants and we had to water and fertilize it everyday,” the students explained.
After the plants finished growing, the sales got underway, and within three days, they were sold. Goers says word spreads quickly.
“We do see repeat customers come back so that is neat to see.”
The kids are not done working as preparation is soon starting for their spring sale in April.
