OSHKOSH, WI (Wisconsin Radio Network) – A second school shooting in two days at a Wisconsin High School.
Oshkosh police are confirming that an armed student and a school resource officer were injured this morning, after the officer confronted the student at Oshkosh West High School.
Oshkosh Police Chief Dean Smith says at 9:12 a.m, they received a radio transmission from the School Resource Officer.
“It was garbled, but the officer asked for help and asked for an ambulance.”
Smith says an altercation with a 16-year-old student took place in the SRO’s office.
“Initial reports saw that the student produced a weapon and stabbed the officer, at which time the officer fired on the student, striking the student one time.”
Smith says life-saving measures were provided to both the officer and the student.
The school was cleared and declared secure at 11:18 a.m.
The incident comes one day after an armed student was shot at Waukesha South High School. Oshkosh parents are being reunited with their kids at Perry Tipler Middle School.
It is estimated that their were at least 75 officers from the area on the scene.
It is believed that both the student and the officer suffered non-life threatening injuries.
School Superintendent Vickie Cartwright says with their ALICE training, students who were able to safely do so were able to evacuate.
“Our student’s safety is our number one priority. Today’s tragic event shows that trained school resource officers can help save lives.”
Police Chief Dean Smith says they are aware of rumors of possible threats against other schools and they are investigating.
