MADISON, WI (Wisconsin Radio Network) -With Thanksgiving officially kicking off the Christmas decorating season, state ag leaders are reminding you to buy natural Christmas Trees.
“On top of being an environmentally friendly option, it’s a great way to support our local tree growers.”
Sarah Hetke with the Wisconsin Farm Bureau says natural Christmas trees are a renewable and sustainable resource, and that Wisconsin tree farms produce over 700-thousand trees a year.
In addition, she says choosing a real tree supports local farmers.
“Choosing a real tree is an excellent way to support local growers and to be very locally conscious about the products you’re purchasing. Consumers are definitely showing a preference for local products.”
Wisconsin has more than 850 Christmas tree farms producing more than 700-thousand trees annually.
“Whether it’s being used for mulch on a path or if you choose a recycling program or you choose to dispose of it in some other way, it’s a more environmentally friendly option than an artificial tree.”
Hetke says many tree farms allow buyers to bring the family and cut their own tree.
