David J. “Magoo” Brandt, age 67 of Shawano, passed away on Wednesday, November 27, 2019 at Shawano Health Services after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.
David was born on April 24, 1952 in Shawano, a son of the late Milton and Viola (Goree) Brandt. He attended and graduated from Shawano High School. He then attended tech school for computer programming. David joined the U.S. Navy, but was honorably discharged after two weeks due to a disability. Following boot camp he worked at the Red Owl as a bagger, and met his future wife, Bernice “Neice” Casper. The couple was married on May 15, 1976 at Peace United Church of Christ in Shawano. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Manitowoc where David worked for the Milwaukee Journal. He was promoted to manager, so he and his family moved to Marshfield, then to Janesville. In 1995, the couple purchased and operated the Badger Shop Gas Station. In 1997, they moved from Janesville to Shawano. David worked as a postal clerk in Green Bay, and was later transferred to the Shawano Post Office as a mail carrier.
David loved watching and playing golf, and playing video games, especially Legend of Zelda, Castlemania, and Ratchet & Clank. He was also a huge Brewer and Packer fan, and never missed staying up on ESPN Sports Center. David was a very social person, and could strike up a conversation with just about anyone about anything.
Left to cherish David’s memory are his children, Robin (Jason) Splitgerber and Jason Brandt, both of Shawano; his grandchildren, Jade Brandt, and Lily, Jace, and Cooper Splitgerber; his sister, Peggy (Bill) Tyson of Alaska; his brother, Jerry (Amy) Brandt of Gresham; brother-in-law, Henry Schultz of Shawano; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice; an infant son, Dustin; and his sister, Nancy Schultz.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
